Established in 1955 by the owner of Mysore Education Society, Dr. Mekhri and Dr. Shivram, Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, also known as BMCRI, was founded as a private college. It was earlier known as Bangalore Medical College (BMC).
One of the best institutes in India, Bangalore Medical College, and Research Institute is the only government medical college in Bangalore. In 2006, the Government of Karnataka granted autonomous status to the college.
Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute are affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bengaluru. The institute is approved and recognised by the Medical Council of India (MCI), New Delhi.
Earlier, Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute was under the management of the Mysore Medical Education Society. In 1956, it was handed over to the Government of Karnataka and affiliated to the Bangalore University, Bengaluru.
In 1997, after the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) was founded, Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute was affiliated to it. Currently, the college is being renovated so that it becomes at par with AIIMS.
Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute are associated with four renowned hospitals. These are Bowring & Lady Curzon Hospital, Victoria Hospital, Minto Ophthalmic Hospital and Vani Vilas Women and Children’s Hospital.
The India Today Magazine and Outlook India have ranked this medical college twelfth among all the medical colleges in India.
At present, Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute provide undergraduate, postgraduate, doctorate and add-on fellowship courses in medical streams.
BMCRI has tie-ups with several top institutions and universities across the globe and conducts research partnerships and exchange programmes with them.
Candidates have to take the CET exam to get admission in the undergraduate (MBBS) course. For those interested in the postgraduate courses, the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and the All India Post Graduate Medical Entrance Examination (AIPGMEE) need to be cleared. Students must have scored 60% marks in the 12th grade to get admission to these courses.
Certain percentages of seats are reserved for the SC, ST and OBC students and 85% of seats are reserved under the state quota and 15% of seats are reserved under the all-India quota.
