On June 18, 1964, Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani (commonly known as BITS Pilani), was established by late Mr. G.D. Birla.

Since its inception, the institute was registered in 1964 as a society under Rajasthan Societies Registration Act of 1958. Later, the notification published in the Gazette of India, the Ministry of Education, Govt. of India declared this institute to be a "Deemed University" Estd. vide Sec.3 of the UGC Act, 1956 under notification #F.12-23/63.U-2 of June 18,1964.

The institute is a privately supported, fully residential and admits both male and female students. Apart from this main campus in Pilani, it also has campuses in Dubai-UAE (Estd. 2000), Goa (Estd. 2004) and Hyderabad (Estd. 2008) as well.

It was re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade - (CGPA Score 3.45 on a 4 Point Scale in 3rd Cycle) on 16th December 2016.

In the beginning, this institute having collaboration with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)-USA with the support of Ford Foundation Grant from the year 1964 to 1970.

In the year 1972, the institute adopted the semester system, the modular structure of courses, continuous and internal evaluation, letter grading, practice school etc.

At present, the institute offers undergraduate, postgraduate, & doctorate programmes in Engineering, Sciences, Technology, Pharmacy, Management and Humanities streams with various specialization.

Here admissions will be highly competitive in all the campuses. For Indian campuses, admissions are made on All India purely merit basis with the best students being drawn from across the country and opting for all its degree programmes.

Admissions to first degree and higher degree courses are made through a computer based online test (BITSAT) spread over a period of about 40 days at more than 50 centres across the country and it is conducted by the institute.

For board toppers who obtain the first rank in any central or state level board examination, aspirants will get direct admission without any entrance exam.

For Dubai campus, admission is made on merit, based on the scores of school leaving examination with a minimum requirement. International students are also admitted to Dubai campus.

POLICY

The pursuit of excellence requires a transparent and honest approach. At BITS Pilani, we have always believed this to be true and are one of the few top institutes in India to favour a ‘Merit Only’ based admission policy.

To ensure complete transparency in student intake in the undergraduate courses we have instituted BITSAT, a fully online exam. BITSAT tests students on their aptitude for Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. BITSAT also has a section on English and Logical reasoning, thus becoming a complete analysis of a candidate’s intelligence and capability.
