Birla College of Arts, Science & Commerce, Kalyan was established in 1972 by Kalyan Citizens’ Education Society (R) with the blessings of  Syt. B.K. Birla Ji and Late Smt. Sarla Ji Birla.

It is one of the premier public colleges established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone in the part of progress.
 
The college is affiliated to University of Mumbai, Mumbai and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) under Act, 1956.
 
It is re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade (CGPA Score 3.58 on a 4 Point Scale in 3rd Cycle) on 21st February 2014.

The college is co-educational institutions, providing regular courses located in the urban part of Maharashtra. Apart from this, the campus is located in another city also as a different name of institutions.

The college, spread over an area of 20 acres of land in the prime location of Kalyan city, is developed as an eco-sensitive campus and it is a multi-faculty institution of higher education with an enrollment of more than 8,500 students. It draws its name from the house of Birlas.

The college conferred the status of grant-in-aid college that the fees and all the facilities for the students are fixed by the government. The student's admission is done as per the Admission Criteria prescribed by the affiliating university.

The college was also recognized & conferred the status as “College with Potential for Excellence (CPE)" by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi in 2010.

The college has been certified with the ISO 9001: 2008. The college has been sanctioned Rs. 1.00 Crore under the FIST (Fund for Improvement of Science and Technology Infrastructure) Programme of DST (Department of Science and Technology) to strengthen teaching and research facilities in all Science departments.

The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, New Delhi, has sanctioned Star College Scheme to various Departments (Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, and Microbiology).

The college offers several UG Programmes in Arts, Science and Commerce and PG Programmes in Botany, Biotechnology, Bioanalytical Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Herbal Science, Computer Science, Information Technology, Physics, Microbiology, Zoology, Hindi, Marathi, Commerce and E-Commerce and Ph.D. in Botany, Biotechnology, Physics, Microbiology, Chemistry - Nanotechnology and Hindi.

The college conducts three years Bachelor of Management Studies (B.M.S.) and Bachelor of Mass Media (B.M.M.) programmes. The college has taken initiative to introduce relevant interdisciplinary need-based Career Oriented 'Add-on' courses. The college also conducts a PGDMLT programme.

The college conducts BA,B.Com, B.Lib and MBA programme of Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU), Nashik through Contact Sessions. The YCMO University has established Virtual Learning Centre at Birla College which enables the students to receive lectures through EDUSAT (Satellite). The college is also a Centre of Institute of Distance Education of the University of Mumbai.

The UGC has also sanctioned Centre for Foreign Languages, Centre for Studies in Epigraphy, Centre for Yoga - Philosophy and Practice under CPE scheme. The College has been awarded the “Best College Award” (in the Urban category) by the University of Mumbai (2009). The College has been awarded ‘IMC - RBNQ Performance Excellence Trophy – 2011’ in Education.

The college has taken initiative to introduce relevant interdisciplinary need-based career-oriented 'add-on' courses. The college has signed MoU with many Universities abroad, namely in the USA, Italy, and China for faculty exchange, student exchange, and collaborative research.

Apart from these courses, the college offers two years intermediate courses in Arts, Science, & Commerce streams with various optional specializations under Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, Pune.
