Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur was established in 1856 as Civil Engineering College, was affiliated to the Calcutta University in 1857.

From 1865 to 1879 the College functioned as Civil Engineering Department of Presidency College and in 1880 the college shifted to its new and permanent home the lush green campus at Bishop's College, Howrah. In 1921, it is renamed to Bengal Engineering College. In 1992 the college acquired the Deemed University status and in 2004 the institution is elevated to its present status of a University.

IIEST, Shibpur (Erstwhile "Bengal Engineering College") ranks 27^th in NIRF-2021 among Engineering Institutes. It is the first college to become Indian Institute of Engieering Science andd Technology (IIEST) in India in 2014. The Institute has a rich history. It is empowering the nation since 1856. Considering the year of establishment, it is the 3^rd engineering college in India but considering the year of graduation it is the 2^nd oldest engineering college in India. It has 16 departments and 8 schools. It has over 250 faculty members and a student strength of over 4000.
