Basirhat College, Basirhat was established in 1947. Its affiliated to University of Calcutta, Kolkata.

Basirhat College, an institution with distinction, started its journey radiating the light of higher education on 16th November 1947. The institution stands on the bank of Ichhamoti, which flows by its ancient seat of learning and culture that witnessed the many souls of the soil rise to eminence. In 1947, the institution was primarily housed at the Basirhat Town Hall and later on it was shifted to Late Khan Bahadur A.F.M Abdur Rahaman's residence at the heart of Basirhat Town. Later, Dr. Shyamaprasad Mukherjee, an eminent educationist and national leader of our country laid the foundation stone at the present location of the college.

Basirhat College, a premier College of the District North 24 Parganas, was established in the year 1947. The College was initially affiliated to the University of Calcutta but with the formation of West Bengal State University in 2008, it is now affiliated to this new University. It stands on the bank of the river Ichhamoti in salubrious surroundings free from the din and bustle of urban life. The ambience is highly suited to serve the noble and expanding needs of higher education. The College celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1996 befitting its reputation as a center of excellence in North 24 Parganas. Its fabulously green environment with low pollution level is really a treasure to all.

The College has a history of being served by experienced and able administrator with active co-operation from highly qualified and dedicated teaching and non-teaching staff. The educational and emotional needs of students, keeping in view of their economic backwardness and rural background, are well taken care of. Utmost care is taken to cater to the needs of every student's immediate and future professional requirements. We are dedicated to our pledge to work more responsibly, more positively and more resourcefully for the progress, betterment and refinement of our students, teachers, staff and community at large.

The institution now functioning in three shifts - morning, day and evening, accomodating a huge number of students both boys and girls, coming from villages and towns like Taxi, Hingalgunge, Jogeshgunj, Samsernagar, Katihat, Deganga, Haroa, Baduria, Berachampa etc to obain their bachelor degree in Arts, Science and Commerce.

VISION

The vision of the college is to explore and expand the horizon of knowledge to the students of backward area like Basirhat of West Bengal with an intention to increase their competence to earn livelihood.

MISSION

Basirhat College was founded seventy years ago (1947) with the mission of spreading higher education among the people of the area. The founders of the college took it to be their commitment to the people to see that the willing and the deserving among those who leave school are not deprived of an opportunity to enhance their academic qualification in order to be suitably placed in life. The Vision of the founders active behind their mission was certainly to create a society where the educated youth will be pioneers in its struggle against ignorance, illiteracy, superstitions and other social evils.

The college aims at providing higher education to the local youth and through it to build up the youth as disciplined and dutiful citizens of the country and useful members of the society. These goals and objectives are made known to the student and their guardians through the rules and regulations binding on everybody related to the college as put down in the College Prospectus and other accessible documents like college website. That the higher authorities are well aware of the role of the college in the academic field is evident from the financial and academic support it receives from there.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of the institution is not only to spread higher education in the society but also act as an instrument for the betterment of the society, viz., to promote equality and social justice and also to create the right kind of work ethos, professional expertise and leadership in all walks of life. By all means, we direct our endeavour to

  1. Promote secular development of the human potential inherent in everyone.
  2. Establish Gender equity.
  3. Spread Awareness for commitment to nation building and public welfare.
  4. Ensure high quality education as emphasized by the university combining it with value based education.
  5. Pursue knowledge without any dogma and utilize it for the benefit of the society.
  6. Foster the spirit of academic freedom.
