Bankim Sardar College, Tangrakhali was established in 1955. It is affiliated to University of Calcutta, Kolkata.

After independence, the restructuring of India called for the spread of education among masses. Setting up academic institutions in far-flung areas across the country was a prime need.

Bankim Sardar College proved to be the beacon light of higher education to socio-economically backward rural masses in the hinterland of the Sundarbans.

The college was named after a local landlord whose dream child it was. His academic zeal and determined endeavor worked behind it all.

To nurture an institution, in the vicinity of Sunderbans in the district of South-24Parganas populated by the backward and downtrodden amid trials and tribulations, perceptions and inclinations, flickering hopes and aspirations and that too in a way without any notable financial patronage was a stupendous task.

The unswerving commitment and indomitable zeal egged on the founder and his associates to fight against heavy odds towards a glorious survival for more than fifty years now. That the institution has resolutely pursued its mission is evident in its achievements so far. 

The College since its establishment in 1955 is transmitting smiles in the Sunderbans and helping its inhabitants to reflect their potential and make them inclusive in the national mainstream.

The NAAC Peer team during its exit meeting during 2015 applauded the college for its exemplary commitment in serving the cause of underprivileged rural people in the Sunderbans.

During 2016, UGC recognized our potential to serve thousands of families in the Sunderbans and conferred upon us the status of College with Potentital for
