B.J. Medical College was established on June 23, 1946. Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Government Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital is one of the premier medical colleges in the region of Pune.

The medical course of MBBS was affiliated to the Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune in 1949. At present, the college is affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik.

On this hallowed ground, came up the B. J. Medical College (BJMC) and the Sassoon Hospital (New Sassoon Building) facing each other with a unique architectural style of both buildings having two white pillars bearing elephant heads at the top. The main building of BJMC was inaugurated by Dr. Radha Krishnan in 1952.

In 1996, marked the glorious Golden Jubilee of our institution, and plans for the renovation of the college library got underway. In a few years, the Central Library was transformed into a state of the art 'Library Services Department.' Following the Golden Jubilee, a number of new facilities - diagnostic and therapeutic have been set up - the CT scan, Nuclear Medicine Department, Cardiac Catheterisation Lab, Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery Unit, the Leptospirosis Diagnostic Lab among others. The Infosys Super specialty Building in the campus is catering to super specialty services for patients.

In 1998, the new era of collaborative international research started in BJMC. Dr. M. A. Phadke, then Dean, collaborated with Dr. Robert C. Bollinger from Johns Hopkins University (JHU), USA. National Institute of Health (NIH) USA funded the jointly made grant application.

BJMC and alumni celebrated Diamond Jubilee of BJMC in the year 2006 which gave impetus to the alumni association. The government of Maharashtra gave the special fund for BJMC through which an 11 storied new building with 26000 sqm built-up area is presently being constructed.

In February 2010, BJMC and Sassoon General Hospital promptly handled the casualties of German Bakery bomb blast. Thereafter, BJMC developed a comprehensive disaster management plan for the city of Pune.
