About Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities (Divyangjan)
Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities (Divyangjan), Mumbai is an Autonomous Organisation was established on 9th August 1983 and managed under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan), Govt. of India, New Delhi.
It is one of the premier institute established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone on the part of progress.
The institute has been awarded a certificate of ISO 9001:2008 Certification.
It is Regional Centres of the Institute has been established at Kolkata in 1984, New Delhi in 1986, Secunderabad in 1986 and Bhubaneshwar in 1986 in association with Government of Orissa. These are centres aimed at meeting the local and regional needs in terms of manpower development and services.
The District Disability Rehabilitation Centre (DDRCs) under Gramin Punarvasan Yojana (GPY) a programme of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India was started in 2000. The objective of the programme is to provide total rehabilitation to persons with sensory (hearing and vision), physical and mental disabilities.
Under this programme, 24 DDRCs were allotted to AYJNISHD(D). All the 24 DDRCs, on completion of successful establishment and running for three years, are handed over to State Governments/District Administration/NGO.
Composite Regional Center (CRC), Bhopal is a service model initiated by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Govt. of India, established in 2000. The Center is functioning under the administrative control of AYJNIHH since February 2006.
A one more CRC at Ahmedabad, Gujarat was established on 16th August 2011 and this CRC also functioning under the administrative control of AYJNISHD(D).
The institute offers various kind of activities and services for the disabled students like Manpower Development Clinical Services & Charges, Research & Publications, Educational Services, Outreach & Extension Services, Socio-Economic Rehabilitation, Information & Documentation, Disability Information Line, Material Development & Distribution.
Also apart from these services, the institute offers Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.).
The institute had received many awards and accolades at a city, state and national level for their educational advancements also received the numbers of achievements awards in the field of sports and curricular activities.
Aims & Objectives:
- Manpower Development: To deal with the various aspects of rehabilitation of the Hearing Handicapped, various undergraduate and postgraduate courses are being offered. The Institute is rated excellent by the RCI
- Research: Research in the areas of identification, intervention, educational approaches, remedial teaching methods, jobs for the hearing handicapped and technology development have been carried out
- Educational Programmes: By studying the existing school for the deaf, curriculum followed, methods of teaching etc. and supplementing or strengthening them by way of improving existing educational facilities and developing new strategies wherever required, newer measures such as open school for the illiterate/drop-out is being conducted as model activity
- Service Facilities: Strategies for early identification and rehabilitative procedures. films and audiovisuals on vocational training and job placement, etc. are being developed
- Community Programme: Identification and intervention, homebound training, correspondence training and also telerehabilitation services are being rendered and evolved with emerging needs
- Material Development: Required for (a) education, like teaching aids, audiovisuals etc. (b) public awareness and community education, literacy programme for adult deaf, Parent Counseling and Programme for strengthening voluntary organizations
- Information and Documentation: Documenting and disseminating the latest information and developments in the science of hearing, speech and related technology is being done
- The institute has a vibrant campus life with a wide range of opportunities to fill your free time

- The institute has separate individual departments for all subjects with young, dynamic faculty and non-teaching staff and with good results

- The institute has taken up the responsibility of imparting necessary, effective and practical education to the students so that they can reach great heights and attain maximum achievements in their life
- The institute runs a canteen inside the campus where staff and students can have meals and snacks prepared in a hygienic manner and at an affordable cost
- Internet facilities may be availed by the students and teachers as per their needs
- The Transportation facility is available for students
- The institute has a significant presence in the field of research. A number of major & minor research projects are awarded to the faculty members by the UGC and other bodies
- The institute has a large playground with will-equipment for different sports like Cricket, Football, Volleyball, Hockey, Badminton and so on
- A medical facility has been available in the Institute for the benefit of the students
- State Government and Central Government offers a number of scholarships to the meritorious students and the students belonging to SC / ST / OBC
- The institution has provided ICT facilities like computers, projectors, audio-visual gadgets, scanners and printers to the departments and also other aids and a huge number of availability of books for effective delivery of curriculum and for inculcating the knowledge of the subject
- A special complaint cell (Sexual Harassment Cell) has been formed for the female students in the institute. Students can directly complain orally or by written application to the head of the cell. Apart from this, Ragging is strictly prohibited on the institute campus
- To sharpen the skill of students and their personality development, various curricular and extra-curricular activities are the regular features of the institution
- The institute Unit NSS Wing performs different type of social services within and outside of the area
- The institute also organizes workshops, seminars, and conferences for improving teaching skills and methodology
