Anandaram Dhekial Phookan College, Nagaon was established on 7th September, 1959 by a resolution of the Assam Sahitya Sabha. It is affiliated to Gauhati University, Guwahati and accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade.

The college was named after the great son of Assam, Anandaram Dhekial Phookan. Late Sukdev Goswami was the founder principal of the college who dedicated his life for this institution.

In 1978 the Science stream was also introduced. The UG Major course in the subject was started in 1959 and the PG course was started in the year of 2014. Now the Department is accelerating its strength having more and more students. Besides in the 56th years of its glorious existence, the department able to attracts students from all districts of Assam like Nagaon, Sonitpur, Marigaon, Golaghat, Karbi Anglong etc.

The present strength of the department in Higher Secondary, Degree and Master Degree Course Classes (having Major & General Course) is around 1000. The department has a aim to  assist  all levels of students  in  acquiring  a research full, conceptual  understanding  of  the nature  and basic structure  of  Assamese Literature, Culture and Linguistics fields,  its  processes  and  applications  so  that  students  can  prepare  themselves  how  to face new challenges   in  life.

The college has well-equipped with all modern facilities and has digital classroom & in all science subjects equipped with facilities like LCD Projector, Kiosk Board, Audio & Video gadget etc.
