Government Aizawl College, Aizawl was popularly known as Aizawl College, Aizwal the second oldest college in Aizawl was established on 1st June 1975 with a fund collected directly from the local people. The college was formally inaugurated on the 11th October 1975.

It is one of the premier colleges established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone on the part of progress.

The college is affiliated with the Mizoram University, Aizawl in 1976 and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) on 13th December 1995 under section 2(f) & 12(B) on 17th March 1987 under Act, 1956.
 
It is re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "B+" Grade (CGPA Score 2.55 on a 4 Point Scale in 3rd Cycle) on 5th November 2016.

The college was formerly affiliated with the North Eastern Hill University, Shillong in the year 1975 up to 2002 and later received recognition from the Government of Mizoram in 1976.

It was upgraded to deficit grant-in-aid status with effect from the 1st November 1984 and became Government on the 1st January 1989.

The college then was a Night College, and true to its motto for the "Labor Conquers All", the majority of students attended classes after their daily work. It was only after twenty-five years that the college became a Day college.

It is a co-educational government institute, providing a regular course which is located in an urban and tribal part of a northeast region of Aizawl played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.

The college has awarded as the best college by the affiliating university and also a number of awards in publication, offering scholarship & also awarded by the different society.

The college offers three years undergraduate courses in Arts and Commerce streams with various specializations under Mizoram University, Mizoram.

Also, It offers Add-On Certificate courses.
