Established in 1956, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi operates under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The medical college is a public autonomous college providing higher education. All India Institute of Medical Sciences Act, 1956 governs the college, which in turn is registered under the Indian Societies Registration Act.
The institute is famous for being a medical research public university and a medical college in New Delhi. The college has been approved and recognized by the Institute of National Importance (INI), New Delhi.
In 1946, Sir Joseph Bhore, who was an Indian civil servant, chaired a health survey and development committee, which recommended the initiation of the foundation of a national medical centre. With the initiative of the Bhore Committee and the backing of Amrit Kaur and Jawaharlal Nehru, a proposal was put forward. The proposal was liked by the government of New Zealand.
In 1952, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) was started under the Colombo Plan with the help of a generous grant from the government of New Zealand. However, finally, AIIMS was founded in 1956 through an Act of Parliament as an autonomous institution.

A budget of ₹500 crore was announced by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley for establishing 4 new AIIMS institutes in Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. The government also plans to open a national cancer institute inside the campus of AIIMS Jhajjar.
India Today magazine has ranked AIIMS in the first position among all government medical colleges in India. AIIMS offers undergraduate courses in science and medical streams. It also offers doctorate, postgraduate, and add-on fellowship courses.
In order to get admission at AIIMS, one has to clear the entrance examination that is known as National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). This is conducted throughout India and admission is based on merit. A percentage of seats are reserved for SC (15% - 5 seats), ST (7 ½ % - 2 seats) and OBC (27% - 9 seats).
