Tamil is a Dravidian language natively spoken by the Tamil people of South Asia. Tamil is an official language of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and the Indian Union territory of Puducherry. Tamil is also spoken by significant minorities in the four other South Indian states of Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and the Union Territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Its literary and cultural heritage is rich. Those whose mother tongue it is have a responsibility to learn to read and write it, and those who live in the regions where it is widely spoken have an advantage in learning the native tongue. Tamil is one of the main language subjects in the Andhra Pradesh State Education System.
