World Ozone Day is celebrated every year on September 16
As a tribute to the signing of the Montreal Protocol on Substances depleting the Ozone Layer. It was on this date in 1987 when this protocol was signed.
Why it is Celebrated?
The day is observed to drive awareness of why, and actions on how, the depletion of the Ozone Layer must be prevented.
World Ozone Day 2022 Theme:
"Montreal Protocol@35: global cooperation protecting life on earth" is the theme of World Ozone Day 2022.
World Ozone Day History
The UN General Assembly declared 16 September as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer OR World Ozone Day in 1994.
What is Ozone Layer?
Ozone layer is a layer of dense Oxygen (O₃) found some 15-35 km above the surface of the Earth.
How Ozone Layer protects us?
Ozone reduces the harmful UV radiation, especially the UV-B variant, from reaching the Earth's surface and causing us sunburn, skin cancer and cataracts among many other diseases.
Cause of Ozone depletion
The main cause of ozone depletion and subsequently the creation of an ozone hole is ODS (ozone-depleting substances).
