Teacher's Day celebration is a tribute to our second President S Radhakrishnan who was born on this date in 1888.

He was India's Vice President (1952-62) and then the president (1962-67).
He was so loved by his students that they arranged and pulled a flower-decked carriageway taking him to the railway station.
He was leaving Mysore University to join Calcutta University in 1921.

He suggested that they should rather celebrate it as Teacher's Day
He was knighted in 1931 and was addressed as Sir Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan till the Independence.
Radhakrishnan was nominated 16 times for the Nobel Prize in Literature, and another 11 times for the Nobel Peace Prize.
As the President of India, he accepted only Rs 2500 out of Rs 10,000 salary and the remaining amount was donated to the PM Relief Fund every month.
Oxford University started the Radhakrishnan Chevening Scholarships and the Radhakrishnan Memorial Award in his memory
He had founded Helpage India, a non-profit organisation for elderly and underprivileged people.
