Rani Lakshmi Bai is regarded as the ‘First Woman Freedom Fighter’, but there comes a twist in the story.

Rani Lakshmi Bai was born on 9 November 1828.

But there is a woman freedom fighter prior to Rani Lakshmi Bai who is held as the ‘First Indian Queen’, who wage war against East India Company.

Let’s look at some of the interesting facts about this ‘brave’ “Veeramangai”:

Velu Nachiyar was the princess of Ramanathapuram.

She was the only child of Ramnad kingdom's King Chellamuthu Vijayaragunatha Sethupathy and Queen Sakandhimuthathal.

Rani Velu Nachiyar was born on 3.01.1730.

She was a multilingual scholar who could converse in French, English, and Urdu.

Nachiyar received training in an array of warfare techniques, including war match weaponry, and martial arts.

She married the king of Sivagangai, with whom she had a daughter.

Tamils refer to her as Veeramangai ("brave woman").

She fought the East India Company with the help of Hyder Ali's army, feudal lords, the Maruthu Brothers, Dalit leaders, and Thandavarayan Pillai.
