Santoor Maestro, Musician Pandit Shivkumar Sharma Passes Away

Legendary Indian musician and Santoor maestro Pandit Shivkumar Sharma passed away today i.e. May 10, 2022 at the age of 84 following a cardiac arrest. Let’s look at the timeline of India’s expert Santoor player and music composer.

Pandit Shivkumar Sharma was born in Jammu on January 13, 1938 to singer Uma Dutt Sharma and had Dogri as his mother tongue
Shivkumar began learning Santoor at the age of thirteen (13) and gave his first public performance in Mumbai in 1955.
Panditji is credited for making Santoor a popular instrument and an internationally recognized playing style for the Indian classical from a mere a folk music and instrument.
Pandit Shivkumar composed the background music for Shantaram's ‘Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje’ movie in 1956 for one of the scenes and went on to record his first solo album in 1960

In 1967, Panditji teamed up with flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia and guitarist Brij Bhushan Kabra and produced a concept album “Call of the Valley” making it one of the greatest hits in the Indian classical music.

Panditji later with Hariprasad Chaurasia composed music for several Hindi films starting with Silsila in 1980, Faasle (1985), Chandni (1989), Lamhe (1991), Darr (1993) & worked as contributing artist for a music album “The Rough Guide to the Music of India and Pakistan”.
Pandit Shivkumar Sharma was honored with several national and international awards, including an honorary citizenship of the city of Baltimore, USA, in 1985
Awards for Panditji
He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in the year 1986, the Padma Shri in 1991, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2001 and was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in the year 2011.

Panditji was also honoured for his various compositions such as Platinum Disc for Call of the Valley; Platinum Disc for music of film Silsila; Gold Disc for music of film Faasle; Platinum Disc for music of film Chandni and Pandit Chatur Lal Excellence Award – 2015
Pandit Shivkumar Sharma’s musical sojourn and life journey came to an end at the age of 84 on 10 May 2022 after the maestro suffered a heart attack.
