Remembering Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar

Indian educator and social reformer, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar is often regarded as the  ‘Father of Bengali Prose’.

On July 29, 1891, this great personality left the world and headed towards the Heavenly abode.

Let us look at some of the facts about him and pay tribute to him:

Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was an Indian educator and social reformer of the nineteenth century.

Vidyasagar was an active and prolific writer.

In spite of strong opposition, he petitioned the Legislative Council as the most famous advocate for Hindu widow remarriage.

He worked hard to advance girls' education and fight against child marriage and polygamy, but conservative Hindus fiercely rejected his reformist zeal.

In addition to reading a lot of English Literature, Vidyasagar was also inspired by Western thought.

His writings include Vetal pancavimsati (1847; "Twenty-Five Tales of a Goblin"); Shakuntala (1854); Sitar vanavas (181860); and others.

Sitar vanavas was based on a well-known play by the Sanskrit Poet and Dramatist Kalidasa.
