Draupadi Murmu emerged victorious to become India’s first Tribal and 15th President of India after defeating Opposition’s presidential candidate Yashwant Sinha
She was born on June 20, 1958 in a Santali tribal family in Uparbeda village of Mayurbhanj district in the Indian state of Odisha.
Murmu's Career
Murmu began her career as a school teacher before taking a plunge in the State politics, and also worked in capacity as Assistant Professor & Junior Assistant in the Odisha government.
Political Journey
Draupadi Murmu joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1997 and was elected as the councillor of the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat.
In 2000, Murmu became the Chairperson of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat and served as Minister of State in the BJP-BJD coalition in Odisha from 2000 to 2004 holding Commerce & Fisheries portfolios.
Jharkhand GOV
On May 18, 2015 Draupadi Murmu was sworn in as the Governor of Jharkhand, thus becoming the first woman Governor of Jharkhand and remained so till 2021.
Murmu also is the first female tribal leader from Odisha to be appointed as a Governor of an Indian state.
NDA Candidate
In the Presidential Elections 2022, Draupadi Murmu was chosen as NDA’s presidential candidate, which she won becoming the 15th President of India

Draupadi Murmu is the only second woman President of India, after Pratibha Patil who served as 12th President of India.
Draupadi Murmu succeeds Ram Nath Kovind as the 15th President of India
She is also the first Tribal President of India as well as first Tribal Women President of India.
