Oommen Chandy was born on October 21, 1943, in Puthuppally, Kottayam district

He acquired a legal degree and rose through the ranks of the Youth Congress, eventually becoming its state president in 1969.

Since 1970, Oommen Chandy has been elected to the state Legislative Assembly from the Puthupally constituency. On May 18, 2011, he was sworn in as the state's Chief Minister in the UDF Government.

He headed on to become Kerala's longest-serving member, governing the constituency from 1970 till his death, an unusual feat in state politics.

Chandy won Puthuppally for the 12th time in a row in the most recent Kerala Assembly elections in 2021.

Oommen Chandy passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, July 18th 2023, in a hospital in Bengaluru. He was 79 years old and died of cancer.
