Kasturba Gandhi: The Commanding Shadow of Mahatma Gandhi

Many of us know kasturba Gandhi as the better-half of Mahatma Gandhi. But, here we will unveil her other side of personality as an individual, activist and a freedom fighter as well.

On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Kasturba Gandhi, Careerindia comes up with some of the interesting and lesser-known facts about her.

Let’s look into the lesser known aspect of Kastrurba Gandhi:

Kasturbai was born to Gokuladas and Vrajkunwerba Kapadia on April 11, 1869.

Kasturbai, 14, and Mohandas, 13, got hitched in a marriage arranged by their parents in May 1883.

In 1904, she actively involved in politics in South Africa.

Kasturba Gandhi played an important role in the establishment of the Phoenix Settlement, along with Mahatma Gandhi and others.

Despite having chronic bronchitis, she continued with the Civil Movements across India.

Kasturba Gandhi frequently substituted her husband while he was incarcerated.

She possessed a simple and gentle persona, yet emerged as one of the most promising freedom fighters of India.

She backed him in his fight for political, economic, and social equality for Indians in South Africa and India.

She supported Gandhi, but she also firmly believed that independence was necessary. 

Kasturba Gandhi has left a legacy behind her, that includes many institutions, roads, hospitals, schools etc; named after her.

India celebrates National Safe Motherhood Day on April 11 each year, which also happens to be Kasturbai's birthday.
