Struggling in choosing an optional subject in UPSC? We are here to simplify this process for you.
Nisha Yadav
An optional subject in UPSC is the strength of any candidate. It is a major deciding factor in your UPSC mains exam. Here is a 7 step process to help you choose an optional subject.
Write down all the optional subjects on paper. Keep the syllabus beside. Tick down all the options about which you have no idea or are not interested.
Shortlisting
Understand the syllabus of shortlisted subjects. Give at least one week to this process. Narrow down the subject count to two.
Understanding The Subject
Please avoid subjects with a vast syllabus if it is not your academic subject. This can save a lot of your time.
Lengthiness
It is suggested to choose only subjects whose study material is available in the market.

Study Material
Coaching?
If you need help with coaching, then always keep relevancy in mind. Otherwise, only ruckus will be there.
OR
Self Study?
Test Series

Prefer that subject whose latest test series/mock tests are available in the market. Otherwise, it will be difficult for you to manage everything independently until and unless you plan to be a long-term aspirant.
Choose the Closest
Give 15-20 days to this process religiously. Focus on the syllabus of both subjects. Read topics. Try understanding them. Then CHOOSE.
NEVER GO BY THE MYTH THAT UPSC GIVES MORE MARKS TO ANY SPECIFIC SUBJECT. UPSC IS TRANSPARENT, and yea, unpredictable too!
