How Godse Became Nathuram?

Nathuram Godse was born on May 19, 1910 in a Maharashtrian  Chitpavan Brahmin family in Baramati.

He is widely known as the ‘Assassinator of Bapu’. Nathuram Godse assassinated Mahatma Gandhi due to his personal perception.

Despite known as the Assassinator of Mahatma Gandhi, there lies many interesting yet lesser-known facts about Nathuram Godse.

There is a fascinating story behind his name and upbringing. Let’s look into it:

At birth, Nathuram Godse was named as ‘Ramchandra’.

Nathuram had three brothers and a sister, with all three boys dying in infancy.

Nathuram's parents believed that the male children of the family were cursed.

As a result of this, Nathuram was raised as a girl from the time he was born.

He was made to dress-up like a girl, which made him ridiculed by his friends.

Surprisingly, Nathuram Godse was made to wear a nose-ring; which in Marathi is known as ‘Nath’ for the early few years of his life.

This is how ‘Ramchandra’ became ‘Nathuram’ Godse.

After the birth of his younger brother, Nathuram Godse’s parents then started to treat him as the male member of the family.
