China considers Taiwan as its province; Taiwan thinks whole of China belong to them
China faced a civil war from 1927-1949, between the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) and Communists.
Communist finally won it in 1949, and the losing monarch Chiang Kai Shek fled for life to Taiwan. That's how one country got split between two parties.
First China Taiwan Conflict: August 1954
China launched artillery strikes on two small islands of Taiwan, namely Kinmen and Matsu. Result: Taiwan lost Yijiangshan island to China.
Second China Taiwan Conflict:1958
China made (and failed) another attempt to take over these two islands from Taiwan in 1958.
Third China Taiwan Crisis, 1995-96
Multiple missiles test-fired into Taiwanese waters after Taiwanese President Lee Teng Hui visited US.
Third China Taiwan Crisis, 1995-96
The tension continued long after but didn't develop into a conflict.
Only 13 countries recognize Taiwan as the real China.
Rest of the world, including India & US, recognize 'current China' as the rightful ruler of China.
