Student-teacher interaction

One of the major factors which contribute to a student's academic performance and overall behaviour as he/she grows is the level of understanding between the student and the teacher. A significant portion of a child's life is spent at educational institutions. This is the reason why the interaction between the teachers and the students must be considered as vital.

First let us begin this by knowing why it is important for the student and teacher to share a bond:

* The student will be able to share any problem or difficulty easily with the teacher if there is a proper understanding or interaction between them.

* The teacher will be able to analyse the student's problems better and come up with solutions to aid him/her.

* The student will be able to exchange ideas easily.

* The teacher will be able to guide the student in a better manner.

The key ingredient for a good interaction between a student and a teacher is the quality of interaction. Now, let us explore some of the ways to measure the quality of student-teacher interaction...

* Student's growth:
Basic form of measuring the quality of interaction between the student and the teacher is to observe the student's growth. It could be in terms of academic achievements or student's participation in various activities. If there is a teacher who encourages the student, then certainly a good bond between the two exists.

* Student's enthusiasm:
There are many students who dread going to school/college because they do not have the right teacher who can help them out of their troubles in a right manner, instead of beating or punishing them. If there is a good quality of understanding between the teacher and the student, then invariably, the student will be eager to attend classes, show interest in school/college activities etc.

* Teacher's growth:
It isn't a measure of how the teacher aids a topper to remain a topper, but it is the measure of how the teacher reaches out and connects with a slow-learner and make him/her score better. This is a sign of a good quality interaction.

* Rapidity of thought exchange:
How rapidly the student and teacher exchange an idea or a thought will indicate their level of interaction. This is vital as the exchange of ideas always lead to gaining more knowledge and adds on to personal growth.

* Responses:
Does the student respond in a positive manner when something about the teacher is mentioned? Or is the response negative? Does the teacher claim the student is bad or good? If the response is positive then it means the interaction between the two is good otherwise it isn't.

* Mutual respect:
If there exists a mutual respect between the student and the teacher then their interaction certainly is of a good quality. In this, the student's overall behaviour which has been imposed by the teacher can be measured. Additionally, teacher's encouragement and guidance regarding the student's choice of decision will also act as a measuring factor.
