And this is not to say that you should not do it, but it only means that people who are looking forward to a career in social work, should love it. They should already be involved in some or the other kind of activity. They should be ready to take on all the burden on themselves just for the betterment of our society.

Social Work: Interesting Career Option

Before diving deep into why you should opt for social work as your career, let's understand what is social work.

What Is Social Work

Social work is an academic course based on humanities and social sciences. It focuses on improving and enhancing the structure of our society, helping underprivileged people and pushing underprivileged communities towards empowerment.

Social work is actually a name for various categories. Some people like helping underprivileged children, some like working for women empowerment and some just work for the betterment of the weaker sections of the society. So, it is clearly a matter of choice and what specialisation you want to pursue.

How Can You Form A Career In Social Work

For starting a career in social work, the right approach is to pursue bachelor's in social work and then do master's. However, people who have already completed their graduation should not think of doing bachelor's again. You can directly pursue master's in social work even when you don't have a bachelor's in the same field.

Who Should Pursue Bachelor's In Social Work

People who are passionate about helping others and want to gain holistic knowledge of subjects related to social work such as psychology, sociology, human growth and development. Gaining knowledge of all these subjects will help you get a better understanding of the society, which further helps you solve problems people are facing.

Who Should Pursue Master's In Social Work

People who already have a bachelor's degree in social work should consider this as the grooming time and gain practical experience. People who are directly pursuing master's will have to work extra hard to understand every aspect.

People with a degree in psychology can easily go into counselling to help the weaker and underprivileged sections of our society.

Opportunities In This Field

Opportunities in social work are not restricted to NGOs, there are various other specialities that you can pursue.

1. Healthcare Sector

With this speciality, you can work with hospitals and clinics to counsel and provide psychological health to underprivileged people. This involves ensuring that these people are receiving proper medical care and ensuring they are mentally stable.

2. Education Sector

Most underprivileged children never get a chance to study. You can specialise in this field and help these children study and become something that they only dream of. You can become a lecturer and show these children a pathway to success.

3. NGOs

If you are willing to look after overall development of underprivileged people, then join this field. Here, you will be able to help people with employment issues, poverty, health and sanitation. You can even select your location, such as rural or urban.

4. Government Sector

Community welfare officers or community development officers look after government institutes such as women homes, juvenile homes, women development projects, development projects for children, etc. This majorly includes supervising tasks and how these tasks are being carried out. You will have to make sure that everything is running as planned in these projects and centres.
