Science-backed Study Hacks For Students

By Anuj Mishra

Everyday, we wake up and make a commitment to study for longer than we did yesterday. By evening, we end up being disappointed on failing to escalate our study time. We have this perception that the more we study the more we gain. Well, you may be wrong.

You think studying for long hours will help you cover a bulk of topics. However, later when you try to remember them, you just pull your hairs for failing to do so.

Let's keep the laborious study technique aside and get a bit scientific. There are numerous scientists out there who are toiling continuously only to find better ways to study more efficiently. And after all the research and brainstorming, they have come up with a few impactful strategies which promise to make wonders happen. So what are they? Read on to find out.

1. Exercise Before You Study

1. Exercise Before You Study

However absurd it may sound, performing light exercises before you begin to study is very helpful as this improves your concentration. When you exert energy, your body increases the blood flow to your brain, thereby, increasing the oxygen and nutrient levels. Studying during this process intensely vitalises your concentration and you understand things faster.

2. Partition Long Topics

2. Partition Long Topics

It is a proven study hack - when you try to memorise long content by partitioning them, there are more chances you'll remember it perfectly and for a long period of time. So break that long paragraph down and read each part separately. Better?

3. Revise Regularly

3. Revise Regularly

We often feel content when we understand a complex topic taught in class and come home grinning. But when we try to recollect it later, we get frustrated at failing to recall it. To avoid this, make it a habit to revising everything you are taught in class to keep it stored in your brain for months.

4. Take Short Breaks

4. Take Short Breaks

During exams, our enthusiasm level is on the seventh sky and we keep studying for hours without moving from the desk. Studies strictly prohibit doing so. Take frequent breaks of around 10 to 15 minutes after every hour of study. Either listen to soft music or anything that makes you happy, which will keep rejuvenating your brain.

5. Study Before Bed

5. Study Before Bed

Undoubtedly, most of you prefer to browse social media or do something entertaining after a long tiring day of study. You might be taking it as a reward for your efforts. However, it may not be the best thing to do if you want to store what you've studied until next day. Scientifically, if you study or revise something just before going to bed, you wake up the next day remembering almost everything.

6. Reserve Mornings For Complex Topics

6. Reserve Mornings For Complex Topics

As per the reports from researchers, your brain is most active in the morning after a good sleep. For around 4 hours after you wake up, the brain has the capability to grasp even the most complex of topics. Thus, keep this time reserved for those tricky concepts which you normally find tough to understand.

7. Take Power Naps

7. Take Power Naps

We often hear people saying that sleeping in the afternoon is a bad habit. Studies from experts reveal the contrary. Taking short 15 to 30 minutes power naps in the afternoon or whenever you feel drowsy while studying only refreshes your brain.

As per the surveys conducted, organisations which allow their employees to take naps in the afternoon notice better productivity from them. The same goes for students as well.

8. Meditate For 10 Minutes Everyday

8. Meditate For 10 Minutes Everyday

No matter how dedicated you are towards your studies, failing to complete targets or understanding complex topics give rise to frustration and discouragement. At such times, we mostly tend to waste a lot of our precious time on brooding.

If you are keen on tackling this problem, you need to start meditating for 10 minutes everyday in the morning. It not just improves your concentration but also helps you keep calm during stressful situations.
