Be it engineering or medicine, students will see a large number of national-level entrance examinations in the coming months. The National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) is one amongst them. This national-level entrance examination is conducted for admissions to the 5-year integrated MSc programme at National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar and University of Mumbai - Department of Atomic Energy Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (UM-DAE CEBS), Mumbai.

Only candidates who have taken up the regular science stream can apply for NEST, preferably those who have studied at least three subjects amongst biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics during 10+2. This entrance test is conducted for admission to 202 seats at NISER and 47 seats in CEBS.

NEST Exam Pattern

NEST will be a computer-based test. It consists of five sections of objective type questions. There is no negative marking in the general section. The examination is for three hours. Candidates can attempt as many sections as they wish; however, only the best three will be considered along with general section while shortlisting candidates.

  • This is conducted to test the candidate's aptitude in science.
  • The questions are likely to be asked on the milestones of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, computer science and environment.
  • Acquaint yourself with reading lengthy passages because you can expect questions on them.
  • Be strong in basic calculations to answer the tabular representation of information.
  • Try to attempt all the questions because there is no negative marking in this section.
  • Try to complete this section in 20 minutes.

  • The NCERT textbooks should be the first books to master.
  • Always be strong with the basic concepts because most of the questions are based on them.

  • Taking mocks tests are suggested to make yourself comfortable with the test format.
  • A candidate can attempt all the sections, however, only the best three will be considered. This means your prime focus should be only on the three main subjects.
  • The subject-wise preparation technique is always a good idea.
  • The duration of the exam will be only three hours though you wish to start the fourth section apart from general. Understand the test format better.
  • Never overlap one topic with another; try to relate them.
