India is a country that is obsessed with movies and films. Bollywood is one of the major sources of revenue in the country. In fact, there are very few of us who can claim to not know anyone who wants to make a career as an actor. The sheer number of people, who are interested in pursuing a career here, speaks volumes about the amount of competition that exists in this field. In fact, Bollywood is not the only an area where they can think of pursuing a career in acting. There are a number of regional cinema industries where they can chalk out a career.

Although some people have a natural knack for acting, this is one skill that needs to be polished. There are a lot of finer nuances of this field that can be learnt only through formal training. There are a lot of other grooming activities involved. This article talks about the courses you need to take, the job prospects and the scope of career growth in the world of acting.

Pursue A Career In Acting

• Bachelor's Degree In Acting

One of the major roles of an actor is to integrate life experiences into their work. While this comes naturally to many people, not everyone is that lucky. In such a scenario, if someone is passionate about pursuing a career in acting, the best way to obtain the required dramatic skills would be by pursuing a bachelor's degree in acting.

Other than the mandatory acting courses, this type of bachelor's degree gives students a basic knowledge of stage combat, script reading, fight choreography and dance. In today's world, all these skills combine to make a person a successful actor and establish a strong threshold in the industry. Most of the well-known actors in any national or regional movie industry possess a bachelor's degree in acting.

• Master's Degree In Acting

As is obvious from the nature of the degree, this is much tougher than a conventional bachelor's degree and requires the students to be able to think on their feet. Students are encouraged to rehearse theatre as a collaborative art and come up with original work pieces.

For this, they have to explore their body and work on their voice and imagination. Students need to have a bachelor's degree prior to pursuing this course. An extensive array of topics covering both classical and contemporary pieces are covered here.

• Top Institutes Offering Acting Courses

While there are hundreds of institutes offering short-term diploma courses in acting, for those serious about this field, the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII - Pune) is one of the best places to head to. The Barry John Acting Studio (Mumbai) or the National School of Drama (New Delhi) are equally prestigious places to head to.

The Anupam Kher's Actor Prepares (Mumbai) has an equally good line of illustrious alumni to its credit. All these courses offer both undergraduate as well as postgraduate courses.

• Getting The Right Head Start

Students from any background are eligible to pursue courses in acting if they are passionate about the same. It is a myth that you need to be from the film background in order to make it big here. The only skills that are needed to be successful here are good communication skills, excellent memorisation power and the zeal and passion to be putting in long hours of work.

The admission to the different business schools follows almost the same pattern. Once you have the degree of your choice, you can look for an agent who can get you assignments with relevant firms and organisations in this field.

• Job Scope

Despite the immense competition in this field, there are a lot of job opportunities here. Since there is no formal long-term employment as such, artists work with the firm of their choice as long as they want to and then switch over and explore career opportunities with other organisations. There are very few other professions that offer this level of flexibility.

One of the biggest advantages of this field of work is the fact that there is no age bar. Any play or production requires actors across age groups and thus, there is no retirement age. Moreover, the immense scope of career growth in this field is highlighted from the fact that there is a wide array of roles that an actor can play.

• Recruiters

As stated earlier, there are a number of regional cinema industries. Other than that, these days, things like tele-serials and web series are becoming all the way more popular. Thus, in a situation like this, there are hundreds of different recruiters who work with actors.

Amongst them, some of the organisations that hire actors in large numbers are Balaji Telefilms, Mukta Arts, R K Films, Trimurti Films, UTV Motion Films, Viacom18 Motion Pictures, Vishesh Films, Yash Raj Films and Gemini Studios.

• Salary

This is one field where there is no definite salary assured. As per reports, the average salary of an actor in India stands at Rs 1500 to Rs 2000 per hour. For tele-serials, a struggling actor makes anything between Rs 2000 to Rs 10000 per episode. For someone with a couple of decades of experience, the figures can go as high as Rs 2,00,000 per episode.

In case of movies, there is literally no upper limit with respect to the money that an actor can make from a movie. In this field, the greater is your popularity, the higher will be the package.
