By George

Childhood to young adult is a long long journey. One day you are going for your first day at school, holding your parents' hands, with a bottle around your neck unknown to the world that you will be introduced to and seventeen years later you are entering college gates, with a sling bag and an ID card on your neck.

All the way from starting school life to dealing with college life, we all grow up. We find more and more responsibilities knocking on our doors. We have more events to participate and organize, more friends, more problems and in all that we try to find some independence.

How Can College Students be Independent?

The desire to be independent is very normal among children and adolescents. They look up to grown-ups and they assume that being an adult comes with the boon of independence. The mere outlook of a busy life and decisions that a person can make, makes it look like independence is a cakewalk.

But, it can be very difficult. Many college going students, especially the ones who stay away from their family find the transition from being dependent to being independent difficult. It can be very stressful to deal with financial, professional and personal aspects of an adult life.

Do not worry. Here are few tips that will help you how you can transition from into an independent person who takes over the world without any doubts.

Don't Take the Easy Road

There can be various instances where you can just say Yes to something that you really don't think you should. The reason for such a response can be based on comfort or because what you are getting in return would be 'too good'.

You should do what you like but don't take the easy road. Work hard for something that you want. That's the first step to being independent. Stick to your principles, and lay down your opinion when you have to. Don't ever take up an option, because that would be the right thing to do.

The wise Mr. Dumbledore said it perfectly, "..there will be a time when we must choose between what is easy and what is right."

Be Considerate and Respectful of People Around You

People have an assumption that being independent would mean, they will have no time for other people. Well, that is not what independence is all about. You need to understand others and give time to others. Talk to your friends, family, and co-workers and listen to them, but at the same time be sure you are there for yourself as well.
