With the release of the board examination results, the class 12 students from all streams might have started thinking about the next stage of their careers. Undeniably, the science stream students enjoy the benefits over arts and commerce students because of multiple career options with unique specialisations. The advantage for the science stream students is that they have an option to choose arts and commerce as their career besides science courses. And this is not possible for the arts and commerce students.


Opting a career choice after 10+2 is an important decision and need to be taken after careful consideration. We all know that the science stream students can opt either mathematics or biology as their optional subject, where the physics and chemistry are compulsory. Mathematics along with the compulsory subjects is called PCM, and when the compulsory subjects are paired with biology, it is called PCB. Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) Or Bachelor of Engineering (BE)

This is the most popular one awarded after completing the four years of study in engineering. Institutes which offer other degrees and carry the name engineering are called as BE, however, the universities that offer professional engineering courses are named as B.Tech. Students who have a minimum aggregate of 50% at class 12 are eligible for the course.

In order to pursue the course, one should appear for the entrance examinations. For instance, Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is required for admission to engineering courses in IITs and NITs.

Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch)

It involves the study on designing, the art of planning, constructing building and others. Students need to pass 10+2 with mathematics to pursue this course. The entrance examination is also required to pursue this course.

Bachelor of Science (B.Sc)

Science students can take up a career in pure sciences. A wide range of courses are offered for students with mathematics optional such as B.Sc in mathematics and physics. The duration of the course is typically three years across the universities and colleges in India.

Bachelor in Computer Applications (BCA)

Candidates who have cleared the class 12 with maths as the optional subject can also pursue BCA. The course will be on the computer languages. It will be similar to the B.Tech/ BE degree in Computer Science or IT.

Bachelor of Science (IT & Software)

BSc in IT & Software is also popularly called as BSc in Information Technology (BSc IT). Duration of the course varies, depending upon the institute or university. This is open to the PCM stream students only.

Commerce Courses

Science stream students with mathematics as optional can take up many commerce courses after class 12 with a minimum of 50% marks. One can pursue the three-year B.Com in accounting & commerce, however, preference will be given to the students who hail from commerce stream. BBA LLB, a five-year integrated programme, is open to students from all the streams.

Arts Courses

Students from the PCM background are also eligible for arts courses. However, the eligibility criteria vary depending on the specialisation in the course. Some of the best courses are:
