5 Ideas to Create a Thematic Classroom

By Malavikka

The place you stay at matters on what mood you get. In a bedroom, no matter even if you try studying, it would be best suited to sleep. If you go to the kitchen to drink water, your appetite will naturally be kindled with the delicacies inside the fridge and you would resort to munching whenever you go that side.

A classroom is very similar to the other living rooms and what you want to do there is highly influenced by the attributes present there. To make that space lively and student friendly, creating a thematic space can help to a great extent. Children especially are more influenced by their surroundings than the adults and are receptive to the visual representations faster. Thus, creating a theme space can be exciting enough to blend fun with learning. Here are some theme ideas and tips to create a thematic classroom:

Subject Oriented Theme

Subject Oriented Theme

A subject oriented theme not only keeps reminding students of the elements in a particular subject but also help them get an affinity towards it by building interest with interesting elements. Say for instance, it is English, you can make students make thermocol dolls of the characters in the lessons and place it in the space available, draw grammar charts and pin it up, put up the best poetry from students on the bulletin board etc. In case of Geography, you can make students bring globe and hang around maps, have earth them in classroom by using a ribbon to divide the room symbolising the equator and other lines for the tropic of cancer and tropic of capricon.

Colour Theme

The colour tone of the place determines the mood of the setting. Say, for instance, colours like black and red reduces the space. On the other hand colours like light pink and blue gives a feeling of increased space. However, if you cant colour the walls, you can ask the students to bring mono colour themed decorations such as ribbons and colour papers to cover up the notice boards, windows and fan center parts. This theme can change every month so that students are glad about their activity and do it enthusiastically taking turns.

Good Habits Theme

Good Habits Theme

Moral values are more valuable to students than subjects knowledge. A theme about good habits and moral values would help in shaping the students' attitude and character in the long run. You can try installing pluck cards of versus from the scriptures or sayings from renowned people or proverbs that will last long in the memory. The teachers table can have calendars that has everyday sayings. You can make the students write a proverb everyday on the top of the board, make them draw it and put it up on the bulletin board, changing it every week.

Feel Good Theme

Feel good theme is something that is made just to have a good feeling while entering the classroom. For this, you can try the following:

  • Use a welcome board/mat at the threshold
  • Have flower vases on the window sil and teachers table, make students take turns to bring fresh flowers everyday
  • Use a room freshner to give a fragrant classroom
  • Make students draw borders for the blackboards with creative doodles
  • Event Related Theme

It is advisable to celebrate all religions festivals and other days throughout the year to not only boost the celebration mood for students but also help them celebrate being part of the school and prevent them going on pre-festival or post-festival holidays to spend outside school. If students love being at school, the absenteeism rate would thereby reduce. Have elements from the festival as pictures and objects the prior week before the holiday and motivate the students to enjoy while studying. This makes them feel good and be proud to be a part of the school.
