What Are The Job Prospects After Pursuing A Home Science Degree

There are numerous home science jobs available and here are a few tips on what are the job prospects after one completes a degree in home science.

As the human race progressed, a lot of super specialities of the different fields of studies came into the picture. While some of these are scientific or financial aspects, the rest are all based on the humanities. Indeed, in the midst of all this is the field of life skills. One of the most popular branches of life skills is that of home science.

Broadly speaking, home science includes three major domains of study, viz., human development, family resource management and nutrition. Now, home science is a three-year course that is available to students who have completed their 10 + 2 in any discipline from any recognised board or university in the country.

Job Prospects After Home Science Degree

The subject is also available as an option for a master's degree (with the specialisation ranging from that of nutrition and dietetics to food science and technology). Read on to know the various career options that are available to qualified people in this field.

1. Nutritionists

Nutritional consultants or nutritionists find employment in different sectors that range from fitness and healthcare to hospitality. The main job of these people is to evaluate the nutritional content of food items and work out a way such that the nutritional requirements of people are met.

In the case of fitness nutritionists and celebrity nutritionists, the body weight, age and sex of the concerned client are taken into consideration before chalking out their nutritional chart. Jobs in this field are available both in the private as well as government sectors.

There are a number of sports training agencies across the country that hire nutritionists in order to chalk out the food intake of the athletes and sportspersons for optimum performance. The average salary of trained nutritionists in the country is about INR 30,000 per month.

2. Dieticians

This career choice is different from that of nutritional consultants in the fact that they chalk out the diet for patients in hospitals. These days it is mandatory for government hospitals to have their own dieticians on board.

Since they deal with patients, here people have the bigger responsibility of taking a person's medical history into consideration and ensuring that the person does not eat anything they are allergic to or something that is detrimental to their health.

The amount of money that these people make will depend on the organisation that they are working for and the average value stands at INR 10,000 per month for fresher.

3. Psychologists And Counsellors

These days, there is an increase in the amount of tension both in the workplace as well as at home. In such a situation, there is an increasing demand for psychologists. These days it is mandatory for schools and colleges to have counsellors and psychologists available on call so that students can approach them whenever required.

There are other types of counsellors available (like trauma counsellors, career counsellors, etc.). A degree in home science makes you eligible for these posts. In this field, you may either choose to engage yourself with an organisation or you may set up your own practise.

These days there are a number of online counselling options available for interested candidates. The starting salary here is about INR 15,000 per month and with experience, the value only rises.

4. Interior Designer

Although this is an aesthetic science, having a degree in home science makes you eligible to pursue a successful career here. While pursuing an undergraduate degree in home science, you learn about the basics of home decor. A number of institutes then allow you to take up interior design as an elective in your higher semesters.

This makes you eligible for a career as an interior designer in a firm with some senior interior designers, where you can gain the required experience. Alternatively, some people choose to directly start off their own firm directly after college.

The amount of money that make here will depend on a number of factors like geographical location, your skill set, whether you are interning for someone else or working on your own and a lot of other factors.

5. Family Counsellor

These people have two major duties. The first duty of such people is to teach teenagers basic sex education and educate families about protection during sex and basic sexual health. These duties are usually carried out by government-appointed family counsellors. The job of such counsellors might well take them to rural areas.

The other type of job here is the one where couples dealing with marital problems or families facing parental control issues approach private family counsellors to help them see the light. Most of the jobs in this field are in the urban sector. Having a degree in home science makes you eligible for both the career paths.

For government-appointed family counsellors, the starting salary is about INR 8000 per month. In the case of private family counsellors, the amount of money they make will depend on how good they are at their job.

Thus, we have seen that there is much more to home science than mere cooking and sewing. With the popularity of this field of life skills increasing by the minute, more and more career options are expected to arise in the coming years.

As of now, going by the career prospects discussed in this article, the job opportunities for home science graduate and postgraduate students indeed looks promising.
