West Bengal's teachers to get teaching tips on mobile

By Anusha

Teachers of primary class across West Bengal will soon get tips on teaching on their mobile phones to gain better skills for teaching in English.

The teaching tips in English shall be very short in version and would be available on mobile phones as video clips. This is done to make it a convenient form of learning for teachers, and to make the education material more accessible to teachers.

The British Council in alliance with Pashchim Banga Sarva Shiksha Mission and the West Bengal Board of Primary Education have come together to fund and develop the project.

Sujata Sen, director of British Council (East India) said, "By embracing technology for English language teacher training, West Bengal School Education Department and the British Council are pioneering a way of reaching a large number of teachers in remote rural contexts."

These materials were drafted to support the conventional face-to-face teacher guidance and professional progress by blending interactive, high quality digital resources like audio and film recordings with printed work books.

Teachers can relate the context-sensitive approach to the teaching scenarios. The merged approach is expected to improve the quality of learning of teacher training and the learners will be benefited directly.

A DVD teacher training series was also launched by the British Council. This was available across the state at 726 Circle Level Resource Centres.

The self-access materials have two DVDs containing five audio-visual units, with self-access menus and a workbook that is designed very attractively.

Government primary schools across West Bengal, were the spots where the teacher education materials were filmed. The film had teachers and learners in various contexts. This has lead them to come up with a work book and self-access menu which are detailed.

The teachers will be able to teach English in a communicative and interactive way, focusing on students' speaking and listening skills.

All the material will be available through the website belonging to school's education department, in the project's next phase.

The final phase will have video clips on mobiles.
