UGC gears up for the National Unity Day on Oct 31 with directions to central universities to celebrate the day. In a recent letter, it had asked the varsities to make small videos on unity to commemorate the occassion. The best three videos would be selected for screening at the Prime Minister's Office, it is learnt.
In memory of the birthday of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first Home Minister of independent India on October 31, the Centre formulated Rashtriya Ekta Diwas' (National Unity Day) in 2014. In honour of Patel, a series of activities are scheduled that day.
Pledge-taking ceremony to unity runs, march past, plays, slogan-writing contests are some of the events that the regulatory body of higher educational institutes has recommended. On 17 October the body had written to all universities asking them to pass the message to their thousands of affiliated colleges.Over thirty million students are expected to take the pledge on National Unity Day.
I dedicate myself to preserve the unity, integrity and security of the nation and also strive hard to spread this message among my fellow countrymen. I take this pledge in spirit of unification of my country which was made possible by the vision and action of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. I also solemnly resolve to make my own contribution to ensure internal security of my country.
UGC Secretary Jaspal S Sandhu has written a letter addressing the Vice-Chancellors (VCs) of Central universities about the decision to launch a week-long nationwide campaign on October 31 in the memory of Sardar Patel by conducting events which would be in consonance with his decisive efforts in unifying a diverse country like India.
UGC has also suggested inviting freedom fighters as speakers for the occasion to speak on the importance of unity and current issues and then felicitating them.
