Urdu to be Included in NEET from 2018

The apex court of India is considering the submission made by the Centre about the inclusion of Urdu as a language for NEET (National Eligibility and Entrance Test) . The test is a prerequisite for admissions to medical and dental courses. The inclusion will be seen from the session 2018-19.

Headed by Justice Dipak Misra, the bench considered the submission which was put forth by Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar, who represented the centre. He said the bench was not against the inclusion of Urdu as a medium for National Eligibility and Entrance Test from 2018.

The bench also comprising Justice A M Khanwilkar said, "The exam for this academic session is already over. We can't put the clock back...The appeal is disposed of."

On March 31, 2017 the Solicitor General informed the Supreme court that the students who looked forward for the conduction of NEET in Urdu language had accused the centre of being 'communal'. The submission which was made as with reference to the affidavit filed by the Students Islamic Organization of India (SIO) by the national secretary Thouseef Ahamad.

The Centre informed the apex court that the introduction of Urdu as one of the mediums for NEET for the current academic year will not be feasible. The test, currently is conducted in ten languages, namely Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Oriya, Tamil and Telugu.

The court had sought the reply of the centre, the Medical Council of India (MCI), the Dental Council of India and the Central Board of Secondary Education on the request of introduction of Urdu as a medium for NEET 2017.
