A recent UNESCO report has said that going by the current trends, India will be half a century late in achieving its global education commitments and there is a need to bring fundamental changes in the education system if it wants to meet the 2030 sustainable development goals.

The new Global Education Monitoring (GEM) report by UNESCO says that based on current trends universal primal education in southern Asia will be achieved in 2051, lower secondary in 2062 and higher secondary in 2087. It says that India is expected to achieve universal primal education in 2050, universal lower secondary education in 2060 and universal upper secondary education in 2085.

It adds "This means the region would be more than half a century late for 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) deadline".

2030 SDGs deadline is tough to meet

There is an urgent need for greater headway in education and a major transformation is needed in the sector to fulfill the needed potential and the meet the current challenges faced by humanity and the planet.

"The need for educational systems to step up attention to environmental concerns", it said in another report, Education for people and planet.

" While in the majority of countries, education is the best indicator of climate change awareness, half of the countries curricula worldwide do not explicitly mention climate change in their content. India is an exception, where currently some 300 million school students receive some environmental education," it said.

According to the statistics cited in the report, only six percent of adults in poorest countries and five percent in India have attended literacy programmes, once they pass the formal schooling system.

The UN report says that over 60 million Indian kids receive a little or no formal education. The report asks education ministers to work on new global development agenda in collaboration with other sectors.
