UGC asks 34 blacklisted deemed universities to start functioning

University of Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi has approved 34 blacklisted deemed universities which were previously blacklisted and has asked them to start functioning from this year.

In 2009, the central government had blacklisted around 44 deemed universities across the country. Now, UGC has given clean chits to 34 of them and they will soon start functioning.

Around 7-8 of them had been blacklisted for the lack of inadequate infrastructure facilities. HRD Ministry will send a show-cause notice to these universities before denotification. UGC had formed a committee under Vice-Chairman H Devraj and had prepared this listed of blacklisted universities.

The prepared report will be submitted infront of the supreme court on September 30, 2014.

Meanwhile, two deemed universities have already gone to the court complaining that UGC failed to follow the process of campus inspection.

The list of blacklisted deemed universities are:

• Bharath Institute of Higher Education, Chennai
• Vinayaka Missions Research Foundation, Salem
• Academy of Maritime Education and Training, Chennai
• Maharishi Matkandeswar University, Ambala, Haryana
• Institute of Advanced Studies in Education, Rajasthan

List of universities proposed to be blacklisted:

• Janardhan Rai Nagar Rajasthan Vidyapeeth, Udaipur
• Ponnaiyah Ramajayam Institute of Science and Technology, Thanjavur
