TN NEET Row News: The Madras High Court today issued a notice to the ruling DMK-led coalition government seeking its response in a week to a petition filed by the state's BJP unit challenging the formation of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test or NEET study committee to assess its impact on students from the backward communities.

The DMK-led government in Tamil Nadu has constituted a NEET study committee headed by former justice AK Rajan to study and assess the impact of NEET on students from the socially backward strata or SBCs.

The order was passed by a two-judge bench comprising chief justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy of the Madras High Court based on a writ petition filed by BJP's general secretary Karu Nagarajan challenging the formation of the nine-member NEET study committee.

The High Court bench also sought the Centre's response on the issue while asking the Tamil Nadu government to submit its response to the plea in a week's time that has sought the quashing of NEET study committee on grounds of it being, "arbitrary, illegal, unconstitutional and unreasonable".

Actor Surya On NEET

Recently, Tamil actor Surya had opined that NEET was against students' interests. "It is only imperative that we rightfully keep the government and change-makers informed about the concerns in exams like NEET, if not such common exams can sabotage the future of our children," the actor had tweeted.

Common exams such as NEET will deprive students of the marginalised communities, and those that study in the government schools of availing good education crippling their dream of becoming doctors the actor had remarked.

"Government and government-aided schools are the only able source of education for students from marginalised communities. Of the 40% marginalised students studying in government schools and 25% students studying in government-aided schools in Tamil Nadu -- only 20% students' avail higher education," the actor's tweet read.
