Shivaji University fixes norms for UG admissions

Kolhapur: The Shivaji University, Kolhapur, has to complete the process of admissions for the first year undergraduate courses. The guidelines to admissions were discussed and approved in an academic council meeting on Monday.

As per the new guidelines, the colleges can accommodate 40% more students. Temporary divisions have been granted to colleges to sort admission process in Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara districts.

Colleges which have been approved on temporary basis for first year divisions have to wait for officials approval from the state government for the second and third year admissions. According to the guidelines, proposals to the same have been asked to be submitted before October 30.

Arjun Rajage, director, Board of Colleges and University Development, told, "The guidelines have been decided with the consent of the academic council members. The demand and number of available seats in the colleges in the division were also considered. The state government took the charge of the situation to sort the admission process in the region for this academic year only."

The colleges have been asked to submit their proposals for additional class divisions by Thursday. "We want to wrap up the first year UG admission process by July 20, since the procedure has already got delayed by at least two weeks," he added.

In the view of the mess in the admission process of the first year UG courses, the state government had asked the SUK to formulate new guidelines to accommodate additional students. To discuss the matter, the varsity officials along with the stakeholders had held a meeting at Mantralaya with higher education minister Rajesh Tope.

Admissions to first year UG courses in B.Sc, B.Com and B.A in some of the colleges have been put on hold due to the state government notification, which restricts excessive admissions in case of the unavailability of more seats than the given capacity.
