NCERT Plans For Regular Review of Its Books, Quality Assured

By Malavikka

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has planned a systematic review of its books , a decision taken by the body for the first ever time since it came into existence in 2007.

Why is NCERT reviewing its books?

"This review is necessary in order to make the long-pending updates," said NCERT Director Hrushikesh Senapaty in an interview with a leading English news daily. Nevertheless, he clearly stated that this exercise is different from books revision and deciding the curriculum framework which are cumbersome processes with nod over policy decision from the HRD Ministry.

Shortage of NCERT books

Parents and schools were reported complaining about the unavailability of NCERT textbooks earlier. Striking out the allegations over the shortage of NCERT books, in the interview, Senapaty denied that there was a shortage in the supply. "There has been a tradition of creating artificial scarcity by private publishers".

Why choose NCERT books over other publishers?

Senapaty clarified how the NCERT books have a distinctive edge over those of private publishers in terms of quality and price, as well as how there is an attempt to emphasise on the Northeast region in these books in order to build sensitivity towards regional diversity.

"There is no compromise on the quality of content of NCERT books. It is based on the national curriculum framework. One really can't say the same for private publishers," he added.
