LG visits DTU to review functioning

New Delhi, Oct 01: Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung visited Delhi Technological University (DTU) to review functioning of the premier state-run engineering institute.

Jung, who was scheduled to interact with the collective faculty at the university, however had a brief meeting with the vice-chancellor and the chairman of the college, along with various department heads and the Dean.

"I had a chat with them. I wanted to understand what the university is all about, that is it," the LG said. The LG, who was vice-chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia from September 2009 to July 2013, was on his first visit to DTU as the Lieutenant-Governor and Chancellor of the university.

He wanted to acquaint himself with the staff "and get to see the face behind the names", University Vice-Chancellor Pradeep Sharma said. "This was an informal meeting in a formal way. Basic discussion was with the faculty; he wanted to know what they are doing, what their roles are, what deficiency they feel. He took stock of the situation.

"There were some issues related to infrastructure, particularly shortage of hostels which were brought up by the faculty, which he said he would address. He said he could not commit, but he will see what can be done," Sharma added.

Jung asked the department heads to practice academic honesty and act in the benefit of the university.

"He also felt that DTU has the potential to be a world-class university, but there was a need of cohesiveness," the VC said.

Jung also enquired about sports facilities available on the campus.

"The LG asked about the availability of sports facilities in the college, deeming them important for the students...," associate Prof. S Indu said.

As student intake has increased by more than fifty per cent in the past few years, the university needs to expand its facilities. But there are space constraints. Though there is a Phase-II plan of expansion, monetary constraints have hit the project, a faculty member said.
