Yoga, a Sanskrit word which means "union", i.e., of the mind, spirit and body, has earned special recognition from the United Nations for which it has declared June 21st as World Yoga Day. It received the global stature due to its principles in treatment which are without any side effects. Yoga concentrates on structured movement (Asanas) and breathing exercises (Pranayama), which are its integral parts.

International Yoga Day History

Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggested the idea of celebrating International Yoga Day (IYD) on June 21 during his maiden speech at the United Nations (UN) on September 27, 2014. Indian diplomat Asoke Kumar Mukerji campaigned in the UN General Assembly to adopt June 21 as International Yoga Day. With triumphant support from 177 countries, the UN Assembly adopted the resolution in December 2014. The first International Yoga Day observed in 2015.
