President of India Ram Nath Kovind gave his approval to change the name of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). Ministry of HRD has been officially renamed the Ministry of Education (MoE). The name change was done based on the recommendations of the draft New Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which was prepared by a panel of experts led by former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chief K Kasturirangan. A gazette notification was also published regarding the Ministry of Education.
Union Education Ministry Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank tweeted, "HRD Ministry will henceforth be called as Shiksha Mantralaya/Education Ministry."

According to the gazette notification issued by the Cabinet Secretariat on August 14, "Ministry of Human Resource Development (Manav Sansadhan Vikas Mantralaya), the heading 'Ministry of Education (Shiksha Mantralaya)' shall be substituted."
Earlier, the Union Cabinet approved the Draft National Education Policy 2020 and the name-change on the same day, i.e., July 29. MHRD's official website and social media pages of education minister changed to the Ministry of Education on August 4, 2020. President Ram Nath Kovind gave assent to change of name on August 14, 2020. The URL of MHRD was not yet changed. People can continue to reach the website - mhrd.gov.in.
In 1985, the Ministry of Education renamed as the HRD Ministry during the tenure of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The NEP was introduced and changed the name to MHRD in 1992.
