Cut-off marks at ease for Tamil Nadu TET for reserved candidates

Cut-off marks relaxed for Tamil Nadu TET

The Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has announced a relaxation of marks for Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) for the state reserved category candidates.

According to the new rule, reserved candidates have to secure only 55% of marks instead of 60% of marks to be eligible to pass TET.

"Though it has been fixed that candidates have to score 60 per cent to secure a pass in the TET, candidates belonging to SC/STs, BCs, MBCs, BCs among Muslims, Denotified Communities and Differently Abled would be given a concession of five per cent marks," the Chief Minister said.

In the state, 69% of reservation was being fully utilised in the appointment of teachers. Now, state has been giving more concession to the candidates than what was described by the Central Government.

Jayalalithaa said, according to RTE Act, 2009, the teachers should have to pass TET to appoint in schools. And National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) had made the TET compulsory for teachers from classes I to VIII.

As per the NCTE notification, secondary grade teachers for classes I to V should have scored 45% of marks in class XII exams besides passing the two-year diploma course in teacher training. If the candidate had acquired the diploma before 2002, he/she should have secured 50 per cent in the class XII exams.

In 2011, NCTE had facilitated some relaxation in marks to the SC / ST candidates in class 12 exam and degree course.

According to NCTE, candidates who have completed the Teacher Training Diploma after 2002 should have secured 40% of marks in the higher secondary course and 45% of marks in case if they have completed the course before 2002.

However, candidates who have secured 35% of marks are being allowed to write the TET.

"Thus, the State has given more concession than the Centre," the CM said.
