Amazon Announces 50,000 ‘Seasonal’ Jobs In India, Offers Full-Time Job For 70 Percent Of New Workers

Amazon has emerged a bringer of livelihood for many, both in India as well as overseas amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw several companies resorting to layoffs and pay cuts.

Given this, Amazon India, has declared that it has 50,000 job vacancies in its fulfillment and delivery network to meet the surge in e-commerce demand post-lockdown, although the roles offered are seasonal and contractual determined by the demand chain.

On the nature of work, the e-Commerce giant said, "It involves a variety of roles, where in, the associates will join other thousands of associates across Amazon India's fulfilment and delivery network and assist them to pick, pack, ship and deliver customer's orders more efficiently." It also includes, part-time flexible work opportunities as independent contractors with Amazon Flex, it added.

Articulating on company's hiring announcement, Akhil Saxena, VP, Customer Fulfilment Operations, APAC, MENA & LATAM, Amazon said, "One thing we've learned from the COVID-19 pandemic is how important a role Amazon and e-Commerce can play for our customers as much as for small businesses and the economy. We want to continue helping customers all over India get everything they need so they can continue to practice social distancing. To enable this, we are creating work opportunities for close to 50,000 seasonal associates across our fulfilment and delivery network. This will also keep as many people as possible working during this pandemic, while providing a safe work environment for them."

On the other hand, Amazon has plans to offer full-time roles from seasonal to 70% of the 1.75 lakh workforce it had hired in the recent months to meet the surge in e-Commerce demand across the United States.

"Like other companies, we hired these individuals for seasonal roles to meet a surge in demand and, for many, there was the hope of returning back to their previous companies once states began to re-open," reads Amazon's blog announcing the move.

This comes as a pleasant news for the 125,000 workforce, who joined the company on a seasonal-role and are heading towards transition into a regular, full-time role commencing in June.
