Taught at the UK-based Staffordshire University's Department of Art and Design within the School of Creative Arts and Engineering, the BA (Hons) Fashion Design programme equips the students with the requisite skill set to make them ready for the fashion industry.
Aiming at developing students creative conceptual thinking and enabling them to gain a real understanding of commercial design, the course provides practical and technical skills in fashion design, garment construction and CAD (Computer-aided design), supported by design theory.
In order to broaden their knowledge and develop strong team working skills, the programme includes collaborations with other courses such as photography and film.
Also, besides having a specialised teaching staff, lecturers and guest speakers from the industry are invited to the campus, thereby, helping the students to understand the industry requirements better.
The undergraduate course is carried out at the University's Stoke-on-Trent campus which has state-of-the-art technical facilities for productions as well as strong links with local theatres and arts organisations. Students enrolled under the programme are given exposure to live industry projects, competitions, study trips as well as internships so that they are able to gain hands-on experience and enhance their CV.
Students will also have access to the amazing 'Betty Smithers Design Collection', which is a vintage archive of clothes, accessories and products, donated to the University by designer Betty Smithers. This is a teaching collection of mainly 20th-century objects wherein the students can borrow and handle the collection for drawing, photo shoots as well as study how the garments are constructed.
