The recent decision by the Delhi University to have Mathematics as mandatory subject for Bachelor of Commerce (B Com) courses for the academic session 2015-16, has drawn flak from students and parents.

Expressing their discontent over the DU's decision, parents and students demanded a minimum of a two-year window implementing the decision.

They have also sent a have sent written communication to the varsity, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), seeking their intervention to resolve the issue.

Maths must for admissions in DU draws flak

According to TOI, amendments in DU stated that it will be compulsory for students seeking admission in B Com Honours and Economic Honours courses to have studied Mathematics in their Class XII.

During the admission for B Com pass course if the candidates have not studied Mathematics in Class XII or do not include its marks in the best-four percentage, they will face a penalty of 2.5 per cent, according to DU's admission policy.

Besides this, DU's norms also stipulate that Informatics Practices (IP) will not be considered as an elective subject and students will face 2.5 per cent penalty.

As per a letter from school officials, changes in the admission policy at DU should be implemented with atleast two years notice, which will allow students to opt for subjects in Class XI itself, to make best use of admission rules.

The DU announcement has caused concern for students of Class XII who are supposed to appear for the board examination in 2016, since such candidates have already pursued the subject and would not be able to take up another academic elective at this stage of the academic term.
