The announcement of Union Polls were announced by the PU Vice chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh during the occasion of the 111th birth anniversary celebrations of Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan at Wheeler Senate House here on Thursday.
Recently, the State Government has also asked the university to hold student's union elections as per the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations. Even though the Patna University Act, 1976 and the Bihar State Universities Act, 1976, as amended, provide for holding elections to the university students union every year, a draft statue framed by Patna University, and cleared by its senate with some amendments, has been pending with the chancellor's secretariat for the last several years.
A committee headed by Magadh University VC BN Pandey was constitutes in 2008 by the then chancellor, RL Bhatia, to draft statutes in this regard. The committee had submitted the draft statutes for the chancellor's assent but nobody knows their fate.
In the year 2010, February, the high court had directed the state government to frame statutes for students union elections in universities and colleges by March 29, 2012. The counsel of chancellor and submitted that the latter had circulated the draft statutes for holding students union polls to all universities seeking their suggestions, opinions and objections.
The Punjab University Vice Chancellor also announced an advanced research centre to be set up on the campus in the name of Jayaprakash Narayan. The UGC and the Indian Council of social science Research (ICSSR) have already assured the university of providing necessary funds for the purpose. Inter-discipline research on political and democratic thoughts of JP would be carried out at this centre.
