Which Is Better For Engineers: A Bank PO Job Or A PSU Job?

Every graduate aims for a job immediately after their education. Candidates even start their job hunt while pursuing their final year of graduation. There are plenty of opportunities for job seekers based on their graduate study. Apart from the regular jobs based on their education, candidates can even aim for competitive jobs such as that of a probationary officer (PO) in a bank.

Nowadays, many engineering graduates are aiming for the post of a probationary officer in banks. Interestingly, engineers are passing with flying colours in the PO examination. At the same time, there are engineers who have decided to stay in the same technical field and pursue a professional career in it. A job in the public sector undertaking (PSU), which can be obtained through their Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) score, is one amongst them.

When both probationary officer (PO) and public sector undertaking (PSU) jobs are believed to be amongst the most respectable positions in the society, it is difficult to pick one. As engineers are only eligible to take GATE, we have decided to address the question based on them.

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is one of the toughest examinations in the country conducted for an admission to postgraduate courses. Qualifying in this examination is not an easy job and one who cracks the selection process surely has great analytical and logical thinking skills besides a good technical education.

Most of the public sector undertaking (PSU) companies such as ONGC and NALCO recruit hundreds of engineers every year for various positions. And these companies keep GATE score as their primary prerequisite. If an engineer wants to get a PSU job, they have to crack the GATE examination early because the companies have an age restriction for many positions.

When it comes to the post of probationary officers in the bank, the work culture and responsibilities have changed a lot in the recent times. The budding engineers who are aiming for this have to understand that there will be no use of their technical education. One can even prepare for SBI PO exam along with IBPS PO exam to become a probationary officer.

Competition is also a major factor to consider while preparing for the bank PO exam. On an average, more than 15 lakh candidates apply for SBI PO post and this number will be even higher for the IBPS PO post. Budding engineers have to compete with all these candidates to earn a bank PO position. On the other hand, candidates have to lock their horns only with engineers to get a PSU job through GATE.

The work culture and cubicle atmosphere will be entirely different for both the positions. Bank POs deal with customer whereas an engineer with a PSU job deals with target and clients. According to the revised pay commission, the perks are also almost the same for both the positions; both posts have good career advancement opportunities too.

As we said above, both the positions are good individually. When the banking sector in India is flying high with great reforms, one can ensure there is great scope in this field. At the same time, sacrificing the four-year education is also a point of concern. Hence, it is you who has to scrutinise all the key points addressed above prior to finalising your decision.
