Every year, National Voters' Day is observed on January 25, in India, and this year will mark the 12th National Voters' Day. The Election Commission of India (ECI), on this day, promotes the importance of voting in the electoral process. Those who have reached the age of eighteen are entitled to vote. Here is the history and significance of National Voters' Day, as well as the theme for this year.
History Of National Voters' Day
In 2011, the Election Commission of India launched an initiative called National Voters Day. Dr. Manmohan Singh, the then-Prime Minister, convened a meeting of the Union Council of Ministers. The youngsters of the voting age were seen to be hesitant to register as voters. This led to the foundation of National Voters' Day, which aims to find and enlist young people who have turned 18, as well as provide them with their Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC). National Voters' Day was established on January 25, to honour the foundation of The Election Commission on that date in 1950.
Significance Of National Voters' Day
The Indian government commemorates National Voters' Day to identify those who are eligible to vote, encourage people to vote, and reassure voters about the election process's security. Each year, national awards are given to election officers at the district and state levels, as well as employees from agencies, PSUs, CSOs, and members of the media. To raise awareness about the importance of voting, some districts hold competitions and cultural events.
Theme For National Voters' Day 2022
'Making Elections Inclusive, Accessible, and Participative' is the theme for this year's National Voters' Day. The theme emphasises the primary goal of National Voters' Day, which is to encourage adults to take part in the democratic process of selecting their elected officials. 'Making Our Voters Empowered, Vigilant, Safe, and Informed' was the theme for last year.
